Today, our government passed a landmark piece of legislation that will protect a woman's' fundamental right to choose.
It was just over four months ago that I became aware of reports of increased protests outside of the Morgentaler Clinic in our community. I was horrified to hear stories like the one of a woman being spat on while trying to enter the clinic.
So we got to work to put an end to it.
And the result is Bill 163, Protecting a Woman's Right to Access Abortion Services Act Services Act, 2017. This legislation will protect the safety, security and privacy of women and health care providers by creating safe access zones around clinics and facilities that offer abortion services, the homes of clinic staff, and the homes and offices of other regulated health professionals who provide these services.
Safe access zones are spaces where certain protest activities will be prohibited to protect women from interference, intimidation and harassment. Women (and trans and non-binary individuals) be able to access important reproductive health care services without the fear of being targeted and shamed or traumatized by graphic images.
I am very pleased that the Ontario Legislature came together to pass this legislation quickly so women in Ottawa and across Ontario get the protection they deserve without delay.
