MPP Yasir Naqvi, alongside the Parliamentary Assistant for the Minister of Health and Long-Term Care, MPP John Fraser, today announced $421,400 in additional base funding for the 2017-18 funding year, which will annualize to over $1,000,000 for the 2018-19 funding year and support the ongoing operation of a supervised injection site.
Ontario is also providing a one-time capital grant of up to $220,000 for necessary retrofits, to support the provision of supervised injection services to be provided at the Somerset West Community Health Centre / Centre de santé communautaire Somerset West (SWCHC) on 55 Eccles Street.
Ontario is committed to enhancing community-based and residential treatment options to help people in crisis and connect patients with appropriate treatment options. Ontario is facing a crisis, and Safe Injection Sites are just one tool in the continuum of care.
This fall, Ontario Updated the Opioid Strategy to incorporate feedback from broad public consultations with health care providers, professional associations and colleges, academics, front-line workers, and people with lived experience and their friends and families.
Ontario is investing $222 million over three years to fight the opioid crisis across the province. This includes:
“As a community, we must take a comprehensive approach to addressing the opioid crisis assisting with prevention, treatment and harm reduction. Thank you to the Somerset West Community Health Centre for their leadership in advocating for and safeguarding all those affected by this crisis. Our number one priority is to save lives and provide care to people who are suffering.”
–– Yasir Naqvi, MPP for Ottawa Centre
“Our community is grieving over the unprecedented overdose deaths. With the new funding SWCHC is hoping to provide the much needed SIS services as soon as possible. We believe that every person deserves access to health care. “
